However, you could take 12 Weber Shandwick employees, put them on a volleyball court, and watch them play some of the most inspired volleyball you will ever see, assuming that was the only volleyball game you ever watched in your life.

The Hammerheads have stormed their way to the halfway point of the season, taking no prisoners and almost no victories along the way. With a record of 3-9 (3 games a night, the record is cumulative through 4 nights of play), the 'Heads have won an outstanding quarter of their games. And a quarter is a lot better than all of them, especially if the vending machine only takes change.

Leading the way has been Captain Jen "Wrong" Reilly, triumphantly returning from a stint in the London office to bravely guide her troops towards (but not quite all the way to) mediocrity. She's backed, as always, by the watchful eye of GM Pete "Take it easy, I'm serious Pete, chill out, take it easy" Campisi. On the court, newcomer Stephanie "Buckshot" Worth has been spraying monster serves and wicked spikes all over helpless opponents. Youngsters Mai-Lise Nguyen and Stephanie "Showtime" Liebert have been "serving up" their unique brand of Healthcare justice, while Stephanie "The Spider" Borris rounds out the three Stephanie's on the team.

Sarah "Two Last Names" Kissko Hersh (that's one last name too many) has provided veteran leadership alongside Weber sports mainstay Keri "Toblerone" Toler. Rounding out the squad are softball ROY Liz Todrin, Jumpin' Steve Sumner, Erica Harris, Meghan "Back Again" Ackerson, Jori Weiner, Becky Meisels, and of course me.

It's not too late to join up, as the season is still far from over, and we could use your help. Ali vs. Frazier. Batman vs. The Joker. Coke vs. Pepsi. All great battles from history, with fierce competitors struggling to gain even the slightest advantage on their prodigious foes. Mortal enemies engaged in tests of endurance and will so great that their magnitude can hardly be measured.

Sharks vs. Dreyfus? Nothing at all like those. In a semi-final clash of softball superpowers, the Sharks lacked the necessary bite to take down their opponents. Instead of sinking their piercing teeth into the tender hide of the enemy, the Sharks merely nudged them with their nose before getting brutally clubbed in the gills with a harpoon, going down by a score of 7-1 to end their season.

Dreyfus, the Investment Advisor/Commodities Brokerage/Softball Factory took a 4-0 lead in the first inning which they never relinquished. The Sharks' lone score came off back-to-back hits from Seth Brett and Dan Zaret in the 4th inning, but Dreyfus' suffocating defense prevented the Weber kids from mounting any serious attacks.

But we're not here to talk about the loss -- the best team won and there is no shame in that. We're here to talk about the 2006 Weber Shandwick Sharks, a softball team that single-handedly restored pride to a once battered and beleaguered agency. Well, that's a complete lie. But this team was pretty sweet, running up a record of 10-2 and drumming up fantastic enthusiasm within the office. Not to mention giving me the opportunity to pretend I'm a sportswriter once a week, drumming up grossly exaggerated analogies and vastly over-hyping a company-sponsored co-ed softball league.

It was a season for the record books, one that will not soon be forgotten in the halls of 640 Fifth Ave, floors 6 through 8, at least until the end of our lease. So if you see a Shark in your midst (see list below), pat them on the back and congratulate them on a fun and successful season. Special thanks goes to General Manager Pete "Big Easy" Campisi, for all his enthusiasm and support. Campisi would like to specially thank Coffee, without which he wouldn't be so frighteningly hyper. The 2007 season is just 7.5 short months away! Up next: Broomball!

Your 2006 Weber Shandwick Sharks:
Alex Aizenberg
Andrew Corcione
Brooke Parker
Claude Alexis
Dan Zaret
James Allen
Jorian Weiner
Keri Toler
Lauren Kinelski
Lisa Parrin
Liz Todrin
Mallory McMahon
Mark Savage
Nicole Nolte
Paul Jensen
Pete Campisi
Seth Brett
Steve Sumner
Traci Mogil
(Plus a few ringers)

Yours truly,
Coach Zaret

Weber Shandwick Sharks: Playoff Quarterfinals

Late Comeback Propels Weber Shandwick Sharks to Semifinals

The best season in recent Weber Shandwick Shark history nearly ended in disaster last night.
Facing the possibility of a stunning upset loss in the second round of League Playoffs, the Sharks rallied from behind all night and used a five-run outburst in the top-of-the-seventh, to snare a hard-fought 14-10 victory, highlighted by Seth "Batman" Brett's three-run homer providing the go-ahead runs.

The win not only improved the Sharks overall record to an impressive 10-1 this season but also cemented the team’s first appearance in the semifinals in six years.

As with most of the team's victories - contributions were made by everyone up and down the lineups - from leadoff hitter Chris "He's So-Damn-Fast" Ellis knocking four hits and scoring three runs. Captain, Dan "Detroit Heat" Zaret, who was twice robbed of extra base hits, added to his team leading home run total with a three-run blast in the top of the sixth to close the gap to 9-8.

"Travel Girls" Lisa "Lightning" Parrin and Keri "I Could Have Been a Sprinter" Toler, each made key contributions in the field at the plate, setting the stage for the seventh inning rally with a leadoff single and walk respectively. The 4-5 duo in the lineup of Jonathan "Soon to be Mr. Keri Toler" Kirschner and Mark "Never Sleeps" Savage combined for seven hits and four RBI.

'Jumpin" Steve Sumner added two clutch hits that proved vital to the team's psyche, helping the Sharks stay within striking distance with a an RBI single that cute the deficit to 6-3 in the fourth inning, when a mood of uncertainty and concern engulfed the team in a way not seen all year.
Three innings later, the Sharks went from worrying about an early exit from the playoffs to celebrating a miracle comeback and the team's first appearance in the semifinals in six years.
The drive for the championship is alive and well.

For now, we do not have schedule for the next game. On Tuesday, an update will be provided regarding the next contest.

Team Pictures

WEBER SHANDWICK SHARKS: GAME 10 (8.9.06)

August 10th, 2006

You might be asking yourself, "What's that rumbling I hear?". The answer, my friends, is the growling stomachs of a ferocious school of Weber Shandwick Sharks, chomping at the bit with an appetite for a championship. This courageous crew of softball sultans has been thinking big all season, aiming high and keeping their laser-like eyes on the prize. Whereas teams in the past may have been satisfied with a simple victory over their rivals, or even just a cold beer or 12 at the post-game party, the 2006 edition of the Sharks has been focused on making the playoffs for the first time in recent memory. With an 8-1 record heading into last night's second game of the year against bitter rival Porter Novelli, it would have been easy to rest on their laurels and coast into the postseason like a lazy boogie-boarder cruisin' a cool wave into the shore. But not this team, and not against this opponent. First things first -- time to take on Porter.

After a 26-2 demolition last season and a 13-5 snoozer earlier this year, the Sharks have clearly had the upper hand against their cross-town PR opponent. And last night they hammered that point home with authority. On the first pitch of the game, CF Chris Ellis popped a home run and the Sharks never looked back. Six consecutive hits later, and the good guys had a four run lead to end the top of the first. And after that it just got ugly.

In the second, the modern-day murderer's row of Paul Jensen, Seth Brett, Dan Zaret, and Mark Savage combined to drive in four runs. But the bleeding didn't stop there. Rookie 3B Liz Todrin drove in the second of her three RBI's on the day, and stud 2B Nicole Nolte chipped in another in what ended up as a 7 run inning. In the top of the 3rd, the Sharks tacked on another four runs behind RBI's from Zaret, Savage, and Todrin. After three innings, the score was 15-0 in favor of the Sharks, and the game was all but over. Actually, who am I kidding. It was over! Three more inning passed uneventfully and the final tally was Sharks 19, Porter 4. Ouch!

For the record, the Sharks have trampled their rivals to the tune of 58-11 over the past three games (average score: 19 to 4). But Porter is now in the past, and these dominators of the diamond are determined to make some serious noise (read: win a championship) in the playoffs. With a tight, balanced squad that exhibits camaraderie, courage, and cohesiveness in spades, the Skyline Sports Softball League has been served notice. These Sharks may be the new kids on the block in the postseason, but they will be hangin' tough and demonstrating the right stuff needed to swim to victory. The postseason starts in about two weeks (times and dates TBD), so stay alert and be ready to show up to cheer on your Sharks as they aim to make Weber proud and bring a title home to 640 Fifth Ave. GO SHARKS!!!

http://webershandwicksports.blogspot.com/

Weber Shandwick Sharks: Games 7, 8, and 9

For those who've missed the past couple weeks, I'm sorry I haven't been able to send out recaps (been awfully busy). On July 24th we played a double header. We won the first game handily (13-6) over Morgan Stanley, but suffered our first loss of the season in the nightcap (6-4) to News Corporation. On August 2nd, we braved 100 degree heat and topped ABP Investments 12-6. So our record stands at an impressive 8-1, meaning we are going to the playoffs for the first time in recent memory. The playoffs will be held in the last two weeks of August, but no dates are available yet.

WEBER SHANDWICK SHARKS: GAME 6 (6.28.06)

DUCKHUNT
Sharks Pounce on Porter PornoDucks in Duel of PR Powerhouses

Christmas. New Year's. 4th of July. Flag Day. My birthday. These are all days of great importance in our society. However, each one pales in comparison to the enthusiasm, the buzz, and the nationwide frenzy that surrounds the annual Weber Shandwick Sharks-Porter Novelli PornoDucks rivalry game. This year was no exception -- with the Sharks sporting a stunning 5-0 mark, sitting alone in first place, and the 'Ducks overachieving at 2-1, good for third place in the division. After last year's 26-2 humiliation at the hands (flippers?) of the still-teething Sharks, the 'Ducks were hungrier than ever and looking to put a dent in the unscathed armor of the undefeated Weber gang.

On a surprisingly sunny evening at RiverBank field, these two press-releasing powerhouses faced off under the setting sun. First half MVP Seth Brett took the mound for the Sharks, and proceeded to mow down the ducks in a 1-2-3 first. The Sharks, notoriously slow starters this season, came to bat looking to strike quickly and take the will out of the green 'Ducks. And strike quickly they did. The first three batters of the game (Chris Ellis, Paul Jensen, and Seth Brett) all patiently drew walks. Dan Zaret knocked in two with single, then Keri Toler, Nicole "Dragon" Nolte (2), and Lisa Parrin all drove in runs with consecutive hits. Just like that, the Sharks had pounced for a 6-nil lead after one.

The 'Ducks weren't ready to quit this year, however. Behind team captain John "Doc" Hollywood's home run, the Ducks dumped a three-spot in the third to halve the deficit to 6-3. But, as they have all season, the top of the Sharks order was at the top of their game. In the bottom of the fourth, Chris Ellis led off with a home run, followed by a Paul Jensen single, a Seth Brett RBI triple, and a Dan Zaret two-run homer to push the score to 10-3. In the bottom of the sixth, this "Murderer's Row" tacked on another trey with hits from Ellis, Jensen, and Zaret. The 'Ducks were only able to muster one more run in the 7th, and as the final bell sounded, Porter was once again left looking up at the mighty Sharks in awe, to the tune of a 13-4 drubbing.

As they have all season, this feisty Sharks bunch followed the formula of rock-solid defense, timely hitting, and boundless enthusiasm to run their winning streak to 6, thus guaranteeing a winning record just past the halfway point of the season. While the battle for clients still rages on in the world of PR, the battle for softball supremacy was clearly won by Weber in this round. But it's not decided yet, as the Sharks take on Porter again in the final game of the regular season. For now however, these Sharks are holding their heads high, patting their full bellies, and breathing in the sweet smell of softball success, as they continue to fight with the heart and hunger of a….well, you know what I mean. GO SHARKS!!!

WEBER SHANDWICK SHARKS: Game 5 (6.12.06)

BEASTS BEAT MACHINES
Sharks Cause Computer Managers to Crash in Battle of Unbeatens

The Computer Managers Req-Ers softball team came into Monday night sporting snappy red jerseys, a big dude with a softball tattoo, and an undefeated record.

They went home with just two of those three things -- the tattoo dude and the nice uniforms.

In a clash of the two teams sharing first place, the Weber Shandwick Sharks emerged victorious for the fifth time in as many tries this season, to take sole possession of the top spot in the league with a convincing 10-5 win. Defense was the name of the game for the Sharks, as it has been all season, as they held the Req-Ers scoreless over the last six innings to pull away down the stretch.

The game started off looking like a slugfest. The Sharks pounced for three runs in the top of the first, behind hits from Chris Ellis, Dan Zaret, Seth Brett, and Mark Savage. But the Req-Ers responded with authority in the bottom half, pounding out five quick runs in a rapid-fire barrage of power hitting. It looked like they could be an unstoppable offensive force, and the normally unflappable Sharks team was justifiably a bit nervous. But as they have all season, the good guys played their best with their backs against the wall. The Sharks bit back for three more in the second, led by consecutive doubles by Ellis, Zaret, and Brett, to take a 6-5 lead which they wouldn't relinquish. Two more runs followed in the third with clutch hitting from Keri Toler and Jorian Weiner, and the final two were on the board in the fifth after some alert baserunning from the speedy Ellis.

While the offense was doing just enough, the defense was doing the yeoman's share of the dirty work. After giving up the five-spot in the first, the Sharks bore down and held Computer Managers scoreless the rest of the way. P Seth Brett made a spectacular grab on a laser-shot back to the mound. Jorian Weiner made a clutch grab of a towering fly ball while playing her first game in right field. And the infield played mistake-free, led by 2B Jumpin' Steve Sumner, who suffered a vicious takeout slide at second base by a frustrated, poor-sport member of the opponents. Jumpin' Steve arose unscathed from the encounter, and like the rest of the Sharks, let the trash-talking and dirty play of the Req-Ers roll off his back. When the final bell sounded, the Sharks emerged with both the victory and their pride, which is a lot more than could be said about the chippy Computer Managers squad.

Standing alone in first place, with a Weber-record 5-0 start, the Sharks have never been more confident or more hungry. And that is important -- because their next game, on June 28th, is against chief rival Porter Novelli. This matchup of PR powerhouses has been circled on both team's schedules since the offseason, as Porter no doubt wants revenge after suffering a 26-2 drubbing at the hands of the Sharks in 2005. But this 2006 Sharks squad is unlike any in the past, and is eager to take on the challenge and continue their winning streak. So come out on Wednesday the 28th, to Riverbank Park on 138th St, to root on your Weber Shandwick Sharks softball team as they once again try to gain industry bragging rights on the softball field.

Weber Shandwick Sharks: Game 4 (5.24.06)

FINISH WITH A FLOURISH
20th Television a Century Behind as Modern-Day Sharks Finish Strong
New York, NY

It's not how you start, the old saying goes, it's how you finish. And as 20th Television found out last night, the Weber Shandwick Sharks only get stronger near the end, as they pounded out 8 runs in the final two innings to pull away with a 15-8 victory.

On a balmy May evening, the Sharks jumped on top in the first with three quick runs. CF Chris Ellis and P Seth Brett patiently drew walks and were rewarded with an RBI triple and single from DH Jonathan Kirschner and 3B Mark Savage, respectively. Undaunted, 20th Television pounced for 4 runs in the second, after 1 in the first, to take a 5-3 lead after two.

In the third, Brett and Savage sandwiched triples around a Kirschner single, and 1B Jumpin' Steve Sumner chipped in with a sacrifice fly to finish a three-run inning, putting the Sharks back on top a run. The see-saw battle continued as 20th scored one in the third and two in the fifth, and the Sharks put one more on the board in the fourth, as the teams headed to the sixth inning with 20th Television holding a slim 8-7 lead.

Frustrated to this point by not being able to shake the pesky 20th squad, the Sharks finally took out their anger with their bats. In the top of the sixth, SS Dan Zaret and Brett singled, and Kirschner knocked them home with RBI's 5 and 6 on a spectacular 7-RBI night for the future Mr. Toler. Savage once again delivered a timely RBI (one of three for him on the night) and the Sharks were up 10-8. Brett held 20th scoreless in the bottom of the 6th, and then all hell broke loose. Newcomer Lisa Parrin, starting in RF after being recently acquired from the Chicago office in exchange for two slices of deep-dish pizza, led off the 7th with a clutch walk. Then Ellis singled, Zaret doubled, Brett doubled, Kirschner doubled, and Savage singled to cap off a rapid-fire five-run outburst. The Sharks defense closed it out by holding 20th scoreless for the second straight inning to put the 15-8 victory in the books.

Riding high off their fourth straight victory to start the season, the undefeated Sharks headed to Upper West Side chicken-wing palace Blondie's. Buoyed by the triumphant victory, they downed a Weber Shandwick record 50 wings in under an hour to complete a fully satisfying night. With a long break before their next game (June 12th), the Sharks will rest, but not on their laurels, and remain focused on continuing what has been a spectacular season to date. As the Council on Foreign Relations found out last night, it's by sticking a boot up their a$$, because it's the Weber way! Behind a relentless attack from the entire lineup, the Sharks swam to a 12-7 victory last night to run their record to a gaudy 3-0.

The game began with an explosive first inning. The Council struck first in the top of the inning, spraying line drives all over the field and posting a quick four runs on the board. But the Sharks, showing a newfound resiliency, struck back with four of their own behind RBI singles from 1B Paul Jensen, 3B Mark Savage, LF Jeff "Mr. P" MacDonald, and 2B Nicole "The Dragon" Nolte. The Sharks kept up the attack in the second, dropping two more on the Council behind a homer from SS Dan Zaret, a triple from P Seth Brett, and another RBI single from Jensen. The Sharks squeezed out another run in the third behind C Lauren Kinelski, who delivered a clutch two-out RBI single in her season debut, to run the score to 7-4.

After a scoreless 4th by both teams, the Council banged out a deuce in the top of the 5th to pull within a single run of the Sharks. Undaunted, the Weber gang rallied with two outs for two more runs of their own after a clutch triple from newcomer Marissa "Last Name Unknown" Something-or-other. The Sharks slammed the nail into the coffin in the bottom of the sixth with three more runs, with singles by Chris Ellis, Zaret, Jensen, Savage, and a newcomer, Roc-a-Fella Records multi-platinum recording artist Kanye West. The Sharks then put the already-nailed coffin six feet under with a 1-6-3 double play and pitcher Seth Brett's 8th strikeout to finish off the Council.

Off to the fastest start in team history, the Sharks have demonstrated the right mix of potent offense, precision pitching, and steel-cage defense that defines championship ballclubs. While it's too early for that kind of prediction, the spirits are high around 640 Fifth Ave as this scrappy bunch of PR aces continues to swashbuckle their way through the league. Keep your eyes out for the Weber Shandwick Sports Blog, which will soon be updated with loads of Sharks pictures, all the game recaps, and more. The Weber Shandwick Sharks, however, have no weak links, only strong ones made of steel, and iron, and other very hard things. It's a team deep with talent, both male and female, that can turn to any member for the heroics necessary to win a tough softball game. And on Thursday night, it was the females who stepped up and came to the rescue.

The game started off with both teams hitting the ball hard. ABP put 2 runs on the board in the top of the first, but the Sharks answered with 3 of their own in the bottom of the inning behind a three-run, astroturf-assisted homer from Dan Zaret. The teams traded runs through the next couple of innings, with the Sharks putting two on the board in the third behind a two run single from starting pitcher Paul Jensen. With the score tied at 5 apiece, the Sharks managed to scratch out a run in the fifth with consecutive singles by Zaret and Jensen, followed by a clutch double from DH Jonathan "Papi Toler" Kirschner.

Clinging to a one run lead, the Sharks turned to their pitching and defense to close out the game. Jensen, making the first Weber Shandwick pitching start of his career, kept ABP off balance with a mix of floaters, heaters, and excellent movement. Sporting a fierce goatee, the 6'6" flamethrower kept mowing 'em down throughout his complete game. He was aided in large part by spunky rookie second baseman Nicole "The Dragon" Nolte, who made five highlight-reel plays, including a hockey-style kick save on a hard grounder and a Willie Mays-style over the shoulder catch of a pop-up to short right.

The highlight of the night, however, came in the top of the seventh. With ABP down to their last chance, they quickly made two outs to put the Sharks just one out away from the tight victory. Then, ABP managed to scratch out two baserunners, putting men on first and third with a very Barry Bonds-like fellow coming to the plate. With his lefty swing, massive power, and enormous head, ABP Bonds crushed a massive fly ball juuuuuuuust foul down the rightfield line. Overeager to repeat the power stroke, he reached for a craftily-placed low ball from Jensen, and popped one up sky-high just in front of home plate. Catcher Jorian Weiner circled under the spinning, tailing ball, and snagged the popup in the tip of her glove, then squeezing it tight to seal the hard-fought victory. Weiner was mobbed by a gang of joyous Sharks, as ABP could only marvel at the defensive prowess of these Weber gals.

At 2-0, the Sharks are off the their best start in recent memory. Next week's game (on Wednesday the 10th) is early, at 6:00 up at Riverbank. So start planning with your managers NOW to get off work early (4:45) and make it to the game. We don't want the team to lose because of something as silly as your job. Let's go Sharks!!!

Weber Shandwick Sharks: Game 1 (4.25.06)

SHARK ATTACK
Bear Market for Morgan Stanley Softballers as Sharks eat their lunch on opening day
New York, NY

It's already looking like 2006 will not be just another year for the Weber Shandwick Sharks. Although the preseason predictions indicated that this was their strongest and deepest roster in years, they faced a stiff test against the perennial powerhouses of Morgan Stanley on opening day. Faced with this prodigious foe, the Sharks responded with the kind of power and pride that only Weber Shandwick employees (both past and present) could, racking up a 13-5 victory.

The Sharks jumped on top early with two runs in the first, thanks to a two-out, two-run double from starting pitcher Seth Brett. Morgan Stanley answered back with three of their own in the bottom of the first, and after a scoreless second inning by both clubs, they headed into the third with Morgan up a run. In the top of the inning, the Sharks offense exploded with ferocity, lighting up the scoreboard for 6 runs as they batted around the order. Highlights included a towering home run from DH Jonathan Kirschner (fiancee of first basewoman Keri Toler), as well as consecutive hits by Matt Girgenti, Jorian Weiner, and rookie 2B Nicole Nolte.

With a handy lead, the Sharks went to work shutting down Morgan's potent offense, allowing just two runs the rest of the way while punching through five more of their own for insurance. With darkness falling on this cool spring evening, the game was called after five innings with the final score Sharks 13, Morgan Stanley 5. While Weber's offense was certainly in mid-season form, their defense was in all-star form, as they played flawlessly in the field behind Seth Brett's complete game masterpiece on the mound.

With their record above .500 for the first time in years, the Sharks retired to Brother Jimmy's for some hot wings, rib tips, and frickles. The mood in the clubhouse was joyous, and the outlook bright for the remainder of the season. So come on out fans, and support what promises to be a delightfully successful team.

"If you can dodge a wrench..."

Click on the photo below to see Weber Shandwick's Pitchbulls in action!

The 2006 WS Sharks Softball Season Is Here!

For those of you who haven’t experienced playing for the Weber Shandwick Sharks… there’s a sense of pride to wear WS Blue.
